This week has pleased us with cool new products with Apple presentations: our Telegram chat worked in emergency mode, but managed. And even now, despite the weekend, continues to take your questions about Apple technology. If you try to study the messages, then among the questions about the operation of the beta version of iOS 16, you can find many interesting ones related to the peculiarities of not only Apple smartphones, but also other models, for example, Samsung. It turned out that the iPhone does not cause as many problems as an inexpensive state employee on Android. Today we will try to concisely and clearly answer our reader’s question about the features of OLED displays.

We understand why the eyes get tired of the AMOLED screen

I use iPhone 11 with IPS, but recently helped set up Samsung A series on OLED. For an hour of use, he ate out my eyes. Is it on budget Samsungs such fig screens, or is this my reaction to any OLED?

AMOLED display features

Recently, even cheap samsung smartphones install AMOLED screens. This is one of the features of the A-series smartphones: in fact, the company shows that even for a small amount you can get a device with the appearance, camera and display, like a flagship (with the exception of a very modest processor). The decision is interesting, but rather controversial: Apple does the opposite, providing users with a smartphone from the same price segment with a good chip, but sacrificing the same display, design and camera.

AMOLED screens have their own features that you may not like

iPhone SE 2022 is a prime example of this. True, in some cases the application of the same IPS screen in iPhone – not such a bad decision. Not only is it cheap for both the company and the user, it is also reliable. Yes, the color reproduction of the IPS matrix is so-so, but it rarely burns out or non-working pixels appear on the screen. And many more note that OLED (and AMOLED) have too rich color rendering. Because of this, many colors seem unnatural, and the picture is unrealistic: white and its shades constantly reflect blue or green.

А еще iPhone использует True Tone и Night Shift, к которым быстро привыкаешь. Возможно, на Samsung похожей опции не было или ее не включали. Из-за этого глаза напрягаются быстрее, чем обычно.

Why does my phone hurt my eyes?

The human eye in most cases calmly reacts to a flicker frequency of 60 Hz – this applies to any flicker. Some people see frames at a higher frame rate, so even if you don’t experience problems using a smartphone with an AMOLED screen, you’re still affected. In GOST R 54945-2012 statedthat light ripple above 300 Hz does not affect vision, so this value is the recommended minimum.

Screen flicker related with brightness control – PWM is responsible for it (pulse width modulation) – as a result, the pulse duration changes, and the frequency remains constant. This allows you to adjust the brightness of individual areas of the screen, and OLEDs do not overheat and do not fail quickly. Most of us won’t notice this, but some do notice the flicker. Again, in both cases, it still affects the well-being, especially with prolonged use. Android smartphones have DC Dimming – a technology that minimizes the effects of PWM, resulting in less noticeable flicker.

On the left is an example of how PWM works.

Last year, the DxOMark Lab held studyin which she indicated that the pupil expands and contracts depending on the change in brightness: OLED screens cause fatigue due to PWM, since their frequency varies from 50 to 500 Hz (remember about 300 Hz according to GOST), and the human eye is just sensitive to 250-300 Hz. PWM is also found in some IPS screens, but it is harmless, because there the frequency exceeds 1000 Hz.

IPS or OLED – what to choose

Many over the years get used to the IPS-matrix, so they do not perceive OLED

It’s not a secret, but eyes can get tired from the IPS screen too. Again, it’s all about the habit of use: even the “flash” of the image on the TV can cause discomfort for the eyesight, due to which they will strain more. It also depends on the screen usage time: it is not recommended to sit with the device in your hands for a long time without interruptions and you need to rest more often.

There is no single solution to the problem: someone has been using AMOLED for years and does not experience problems, while someone has dry eyes in an hour and a half. It’s just worth taking into account the fact that eye strain is not a natural condition of human vision. There is no escape from radiation and flicker, so the best way out is to limit the use of your smartphone.
