Olympic champion Belinda Bencic had to fight hard on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Berlin grass court tournament, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 against German Jule Niemeier. World number 17 Bencic needed 2 hours 22 minutes to dispose of the 96th-ranked Niemeier, breaking in the third and final game of the third set.
