According to The Verge, smart speaker maker Sonos accidentally shipped more to customers than they ordered. In addition to sending additional speakers, the company charges for these products and wants them returned. While Sonos refunds incorrect payments, customers want a rebate for putting up with the inconvenience.
Two customers told The Verge that they each ordered one Sonos Move and received three additional speakers. Another customer has over $2,000 in false charges after ordering one of the $399 Sonos Move speakers. After receiving a total of seven speakers, Sonos will offer refunds within 10 business days.
Customers have also reported their Sonos shipping issues to Reddit. The problems were not limited to the Sonos Move; some users received additional Roam and Ray speakers (along with payment).
Sonos says these issues are “rare”
Meanwhile, the company sent out an email notification to affected customers apologizing for the inconvenience. An email from CIO Ruth Sleater says:
A recent update to our systems has resulted in some orders being processed multiple times. Unfortunately, you are experiencing this error and will receive multiple shipments of your order.
I want to personally apologize for the inconvenience caused. You have not been charged and will receive prepaid return labels for all oversized orders to this email address within 2-3 business days. To make this as easy as possible for you, we are happy to schedule delivery with our carrier. Please reply to this email or call our priority support team at 1 800-680-3527 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.
Once again, we are truly sorry. Thank you for being a valued customer and supporting Sonos. Such problems rarely happen and we will do our best to fix it.

It is not known how many customers in total are affected by this issue and it was probably interesting to some as they thought they would get extra speakers for free. This will likely hurt Sonos’ reputation, but I’m sure the company will bounce back over time. The Verge also raises a good point; according to the FTC, customers may not have to pay if they don’t return the speakers. The FTC website says:
By law, companies cannot send you unordered items and then demand payment. This means you never have to pay for items you received but didn’t order. You also do not need to return unordered goods. You have the legal right to keep it as a free gift.
