Only fifteen years after the launch of the iPhone, Thunderbird is finally going be declined in a mobile version. To bring its free email client to mobile, Mozilla will not start from scratch, but rely on K-9 Mailan application open-source available on Android.
The K-9 Mail developer has already joined the Thunderbird team. Its application will be renamed Thunderbird when it gets close enough to the design and functionality of desktop Thunderbird. The roadmap includes a simplified configuration of its email account, improvements for folders, support for filters and synchronization between platforms.
While the desktop version includes a calendar and an address book, the mobile version of Thunderbird will focus primarily on emails. In addition, this mobile version will only concern Android at first. An iOS version is under consideration, but nothing should be expected for a (long) while. No launch date announced for the Android version. The most impatient can install K-9 Mail which will gradually evolve until it spreads its wings under the name Thunderbird.
