Just last week, the European Union officially announced that from 2024 all gadgets must be equipped with a USB-C port for charging. Senators are now calling on the US Department of Commerce to adopt a similar policy to avoid confusion over “lack of compatibility standards for charging.”
The letter, signed by Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, was sent to US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. The senators explain that the lack of a US interoperability standard could lead to e-waste problems and environmental damage, as well as being a burden on consumers.
Proprietary charging standards like Apple’s Lightning port are an example of planned gadget obsolescence that “costs a lot and frustrates consumers, and fuels e-waste,” the senators said.
The senators point out that the US should follow the EU’s lead as the new single charger standard law is an example of fighting powerful tech companies to reduce e-waste.
Most likely, Apple will react before the US authorities pass a law on a single standard for chargers for gadgets, and will release an iPhone with a USB-C port as early as 2023. However, the ultimate goal of the company is to make a smartphone completely without ports.
