It’s been several years since Amazon hinted at its intention to develop a drone delivery service. Today, the retail giant announces that its service dubbed “Prime Air” will launch this year in the city of Lockeford, California.
A project announced since 2013
Jeff Bezos had announced plans to launch his drone delivery service as early as 2013. However, designing the ideal drone for the purpose was not easy. The commercial giant notably created more than two dozen prototypes before obtaining the expected result. Called MK27-2, the device is equipped with a sophisticated system allowing it to fly unattended while avoiding moving and stationary obstacles.
” Most drones do not have this capability (…) and require spotters to help them avoid risks. They can be deployed quite quickly, but remain limited to a small radius of operation “Explained Amazon, stipulating that the MK27-2 will be able to carry up to 2.26 kilograms of products packaged in a package the size of a shoebox.
The trading giant is waiting for the green light from the authorities
Amazon is still waiting for the green light from the authorities to be able to make deliveries by drones. Thus, the firm did not specify the date of deployment of this service in the city of Lockeford. ” In terms of additional approvals, the FAA will review our plans and confirm that our proposed operation at Lockeford complies with the National Environmental Policy Act said Av Raichura Zammit, spokesperson for the trading giant.
For its part, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) simply indicated that it could not comment on this subject for the moment. ” We do not comment on pending certification projects or discussions with companies said Kiiva Williams, spokeswoman for the government agency.
Note that Amazon is not the only company to want to get into drone delivery. At the end of May 2022, Walmart announced that its drone delivery service would be available in around 30 locations in the United States before the end of the year.
