US President Joe Biden said he was “proud” of the Apple employees in Maryland who voted to unionize over the weekend. Although other Apple retail stores have already discussed unionization, Maryland employees have become the first employees of Apple retail stores in the United States.
“Workers have the right to determine under what conditions they will or will not work,” Biden told reporters. He further stated that “everyone will be better off, including the final product”, referring to the union organization.
More than 100 employees at the Apple Store in Towson, Maryland took part in the unionization vote last Wednesday through Saturday. 65 employees voted in favor of joining the union, while 33 voted against. The National Labor Relations Board will have to confirm the results of the vote, this process may take about a week, after which Apple will begin negotiations with representatives of the union.
Maryland Apple Store employees push for higher wages and better working conditions.
“The decision to form a union is because we, as workers, will have access to rights that we do not currently have,” the Towson-based organizers said in a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Apple opposes attempts to unionize, but a Maryland store unionization vote could spur other stores that have already discussed the possibility.
