Samsung has just signed a historic contract with Apple to build the new screen for the iPhone 14, 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro, and Max.

For years Apple has chosen to entrust the production of its iPhone screens to its great historical rival Samsung. If the latter already offers Galaxy S22 which come to compete with the latest products from Apple, this does not prevent the Korean brand from collaborating with its Californian counterpart.

Things should still be the same this year with the production of 80 million OLED panels for the Cupertino company. According to the latest reports from Electronic Times, Samsung is expected to offer 38.17 million panels for the two “classic” iPhone 14 models.

Samsung far ahead of LG and BOE

The rest of the production should focus on the iPhone 14 Pro and the Pro Max version (which could find the name “Plus”). If the two screens will not be identical (one will be LPTO and the other LPTS), Samsung Display (the group’s subsidiary in charge of screen production) therefore becomes Apple’s number one subcontractor in this area.

While the rest of the production should be provided by LG and the Chinese BOE, which has passed various quality tests in recent weeks, Samsung is taking advantage of its good relationship with Apple to afford the lion’s share. Regarding the next iPhone, if we were not to have a revolution in the discovery of the screen, Apple seems to want to offer a less energy-consuming panel than on the iPhone 13.

A slab that prepares the arrival of Always-on

An idea that completely follows the Apple line as the Apple brand tries to boost the autonomy of its devices as much as possible. At the same time, the design of this less energy-consuming panel should make it possible, in the future, to set up the “Always-on display” function which seems to be very close to Apple’s heart.

As a reminder, this feature should make it possible, as it already does on the Apple Watch, to keep the screen of your phone permanently on, but with a refresh rate so low that the energy consumption of the screen would be minimal.

iPhone 14: Face ID for big change

As a reminder, the next phone model from Apple should above all be distinguished by its design. Apple would indeed have reviewed the operation of Face ID to put an end to the notch which had nevertheless become the distinctive sign of Apple phones. She who had even managed to invite herself on the latest Macs.

With a “pill” system present on the iPhone 14 Pro according to the latest rumors, Samsung will therefore review the contours of the screen of the next iPhone. It will obviously not change in size compared to the iPhone 13, but the cutouts around the notch should be much more complicated this year because of this “pill” or “double punch”.
