Dead Space was undoubtedly a pretty spooky and gory affair, but according to the developers of its spiritual successor, The Callisto Protocol, there’s a lot more to come.
The celebration for horror fans will start on December 2nd, when the new, playable shocker The Callisto Protocol will be launched for PC and consoles. Since the developers have already provided the nail-hostile horror atmosphere in Dead Space, they want to turn the goosebumps controller again with their new project.
There were very clear guidelines for this, as Creative Director Christopher Stone revealed to us in a detailed interview.
Inspiration from movies and games
Of course, you can’t make a terrifying horror game unless you’re a die-hard fan of the genre yourself. Because of this, the creators of The Callisto Protocol made it their mission to use their favorite movies as a template for many parts of the game. So it’s little wonder that the trailers and screenshots shown so far are strikingly reminiscent of film icons such as Das Ding or the controversial insider tip Event Horizon. The developers also took games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill as examples of how good horror and thrills can be created.
Friends become monsters
Equally important, according to the CCO, was establishing a relationship between the player and his opponents. It would be less scary if the enemies seemed too abstract and didn’t move through the dark corridors of the maximum security prison in a comprehensible way.
For this reason, almost all monstrosities in the game should be recognizable as having once been human. And it’s entirely possible that tender friendships with fellow inmates will dissolve in a cloud of blood and slime. Then there is no time to mourn, because the disgusting something will blow your life out faster than you can spell its former name.
