The AirPods Pro 2 are expected to be released before the end of the year, and 52audio has released images showing the hardware design. The site previously posted images of the design of the third-generation AirPods ahead of their release.
Background
52audio first came to our attention last year when a post shared what turned out to be accurate images of the new AirPods 3 design. While leaks were all over the place for the third-generation AirPods leading up to their release, 52audio posted actual images of the hardware that was later sent. Today’s images don’t appear to be actual product photos like they did last time, but the design changes are consistent with an earlier leak published by MacRumors last fall.
AirPod Pro 2 design
There is no big surprise in the design of the AirPods Pro 2 earbuds themselves. While there were initially rumors of a stemless design similar to the Beats Studio Buds, we expected the AirPods Pro 2 to support the AirPods Pro design for a while.
What’s inside AirPods Pro 2 is important for the upcoming upgrade to AirPods Pro. The updated hardware is expected to be boosted by a significantly upgraded processor capable of Apple Lossless Audio (ALAC) – we also reported on the Bluetooth 5.2-enabled LC3 codec in the Apple AirPods beta firmware. This codec provides higher quality audio streaming with less power consumption.
There have been rumors that AirPods have long had health features in the works at some point, but we won’t be holding our breath with heart rate tracking and temperature monitoring coming to these headphones.
Charging case update
Apple re-released the AirPods Pro charging case last year to add MagSafe compatibility to a wireless charging compatible accessory. It looks like Apple is planning a visual update for the AirPods Pro 2 charging case this year. The previous leak, as well as today’s images, show built-in holes, presumably for playing a chime when using the newly added Find My support to find a lost case.
52audio also suggests that the updated charging case will switch to USB-C based on images, but the similarities between Lightning and USB-C ports make it difficult to judge from images. While USB-C is expected to arrive on the iPhone 15 in 2023, we expect Lightning to remain on the iPhone 14 this fall. In addition, reliable leaks indicate that Lightning will remain for AirPods Pro 2 this year.
In addition to some audio output cutouts on the new charging case, there is a new side component in the design of the case. This was present in the earlier leak as well as today’s images. The component appears to be capable of supporting a loop accessory such as point-and-shoot cameras. Third-party clip-on cases are already popular for AirPods cases, so perhaps Apple will integrate a holder without the need for a protective case for the charging case.
