The company Nothing was founded by Carl Pei and the design of the first mobile is made by Teenage Engineering. Here we collect rumors, information and details about the release of Nothing Phone 1.
No top chip in the phone
One of the first details that Carl Pei revealed about Nothing Phone 1 was that the phone would use a chip from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series. Many then assumed that it was the new top processor Spandragon 8 Gen 1, but this is not the case.
The phone is instead based on the Snapdragon 778G +, a new system circuit in the mid-price segment. Carl Pei confirms this Input.
The chip has slightly lower performance than what is found in the top models, but should have built-in support for wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Features that we can therefore expect to see in Phone 1.
The reasons for choosing a system circuit in the middle segment are stated to be that Carl Pei believes that the top circuits do not provide enough for the money. He believes that the 778G + is powerful enough for the intended users, while the chip is more energy efficient than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which provides better battery life, and the lower purchase cost means cheaper mobiles for customers.
Nothing has not set an official price for its Phone 1, but advance speculation and leaks indicate a pricing around 500 euros, just over 5,300 kronor.
Carl Pei comments on the news about the less powerful system circuit in his own distinctive way.
Transparent design
Nothing seems to have found its design language: transparent consumer electronics. Just like the Ear 1 headphones, the Phone 1 mobile phone will have a transparent chassis. Behind the spectacular look is the Swedish design company Teenage Engineering.
The official launch of the phone will not take place until July, but now Oneplus founder Carl Pei’s new company Nothing has shown a first picture of his already pre-hyped mobile phone.
Bold. Warm. Full of soul.
A return to instinct.

Raised SEK 1.3 billion
The Swede Carl Pei made a name for himself with Oneplus, a Chinese mobile brand with which he had a key role from the company’s start. In the autumn of 2020, Carl Pei left Oneplus to start his own secret tech company Nothing. Since then, the company has launched a pair of wireless headphones, Ear (1), employed 300 people in six countries and raised $ 144 million in venture capital, around SEK 1.35 billion. A cash register that they will use to create an alternative to Apple, according to Carl Pei.
The main number, which was presented in a great video, will of course be an Android phone called Nothing (1). It was speculated that the mobile could be launched during an event at the end of March, but this did not happen.
Instead, we got to see the beta version of the Nothing Os operating system, which will also be released for a select group of Android phones from other manufacturers, such as Samsung.
Then Nothing (1) is launched
Now comes a new message from the young tech company, and it sounds like the Nothing mobile will be premiered on July 12 during a physical event held in London, UK.
Not much is known about the phone at present – we know, however, that it comes with a Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm, and runs with Nothing’s self-developed Olympics. The invitation to the July event does not say much either – the picture that was sent shows a multicolored, non-figurative motif (alternatively a close-up) and the words “Return to instinct”.
A recap of what’s officially out there:
– Recycled aluminum mid-frame
– Transparent back
– Wireless charging
– @Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
– Bonus: no chin
– Announcement date coming (very) soon– Nothing (@nothing) May 30, 2022
The plan: Build a new ecosystem
According to Carl Pei, Notting’s long-term plan is to build a strong ecosystem around the products. He compares how Apple phones, headphones, computers and other devices interact more or less seamlessly with each other.
It remains to be seen whether the company succeeds with its great ambitions. The first product, the Ear (1) headphones, has not impressed tech media. For example, Ny Teknik’s Viktor Krylmark writes that Ear (1) is “cool, but they aimed for more than just OK”.
