This fall, Apple should introduce a completely new line of iPhone 14 with new features such as an always-on display and upgraded camera hardware. But what chip will be in the iPhone 14? As it turns out, this year’s iPhone 14 chip will be different from the iPhone 14 Pro chip for the first time.
Recall that the iPhone 14 line is expected to consist of four different devices with screens of two different sizes. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will feature a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature a 6.7-inch display.
This will be the first time that Apple has released a non-professional version of the iPhone with a 6.7-inch display. But with that said, there will be some key differences between the iPhone 14 models and the iPhone 14 Pro models. The iPhone 14 line will have different chips.
New iPhone 14 chip
Apple traditionally upgrades iPhone chips every year. For example, the iPhone 12 line is equipped with the A14 chip, while the iPhone 13 line is equipped with the A15 chip. That won’t happen with the iPhone 14 chip this year.
According to trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this year, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max chips will not receive an update. This means that these devices will retain the A15 processor currently used in the iPhone 13 line.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get an updated processor. These two devices are expected to feature the new A16 chip. The different chips on the iPhone 14 models essentially give customers an extra reason to opt for the more powerful (and more expensive) iPhone 14 Pro models.
iPhone 14 chip performance
While tests in real conditions are expected, the roadmap Apple Supper TSMC Indicates that the A16 chip will be manufactured using the same 5nm process as the A15 and A14.
Same process technology limits year-over-year performance improvement, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t see no improvements. When upgrading chips from the A14 to the A15, Apple has improved performance and efficiency by about 10%. It is not clear if there will be the same changes this year.
Apple is expected to make a major chip upgrade from the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 15, but that won’t happen until 2023.
