With its latest beta BIOS for its motherboards, MSI bypasses the limited settings of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with further improvements, according to a field report.

After MSI had already released a beta BIOS for current MSI mainboards with AMD’s 500 series chipset in mid-June, which actually unlocked features such as voltage settings, Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer, the manufacturer’s forum is at the end of June another Pre-release released, which introduces the Kombo Strike feature. Depending on the setting, this promises automatic improvements in power consumption, temperature and performance in three stages.

A Reddit user named “Mannekino” recently shared his experiences with the new beta BIOS in connection with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and the MEG B550 Unify motherboard model divided, while two 360 mm radiators are responsible for cooling. According to this, the power consumption was reduced by 19 watts and the peak temperatures by 11 degrees Celsius despite the already strong cooling, while at the same time there was a little more performance, albeit only in the range of 2 to 3 percent.

Noisy Tomshardware.com It’s not yet known how “Kombo Strike” officially works, but Reddit user “Mannekino” suspects that it’s an automated version of AMD’s undervolting feature Curve Optimizer.

Performance plus with lower consumption

In Cinebench R23 with Kombo Strike disabled, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D reportedly averaged 14,641 points after a second run to heat up the system. With Kombo Strike at level 1, the value increased to 14,732 points, at level 2 to 14,961 and at level 3 to 15,049 points. At the highest level, the chip achieved a performance increase of 2.7 percent at best. Other benchmarks including Superposition, 3DMark Time Spy, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Red Dead Redemption 2 would have shown similar behavior.

With Cinebench R23 in a ten-minute loop, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D meanwhile reached an average temperature of 81.3 degrees Celsius and a power consumption of 112.2 watts by default. When Kombo Strike was set to level 3, the temperature and performance dropped noticeably to 72.3 degrees Celsius and 98.2 watts. Even if the small increase in performance shouldn’t play a role in everyday use, the reduced power consumption and temperature obviously represent significant improvements through the feature.
