After the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the hoax circulated that Hideo Kojima was the perpetrator. Now his studio Kojima Productions has threatened legal action.
Japan’s longtime Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was gunned down in the street last Friday. He succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Even though the perpetrator has already been caught, international news programs made headlines elsewhere, which are also related to the video game industry.
A hoax with consequences
Images of the alleged perpetrator were sent, which clearly showed the “Metal Gear Solid” and “Death Stranding” creator Hideo Kojima. Accordingly, Kojima is said to have shot Abe, whereby he was also titled as a left-wing extremist because he was seen in the pictures next to a poster of the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.
It is not yet known how the allegations came about and who allowed themselves this evil “joke”. Noisy PC gamer It is said to have started as a racist hoax on 4chan, prompting French politician Damien Rieu and a Greek news network to also condemn Kojima as the perpetrator. After the perpetrator Tetsuya Yamagami, who admitted to having shot Abe with a homemade gun, was arrested, Rieu deleted his Twitter post and publicly apologized to Kojima.
Should the identity of the fake reporter become known, the person could find himself in court. Because Kojima Productions has spoken out about the false reports and has announced that legal action will be taken.
“Kojima Productions condemns the spread of false reports and rumors that convey false information. We do not tolerate such defamation and will consider taking legal action in some cases,” the statement said official statement. Hideo Kojima has not personally commented on the false reports. Nor is it to be expected that this will happen in the future.
History only shows once again that a “joke” can have far-reaching consequences in this day and age. It remains to be seen whether the culprit will be held accountable in this case as well.
In a now deleted tweet, French far-right politician Damien Rieu accused the far-left of murdering Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and used photos of game developer Hideo Kojima instead of pictures of the current suspect Tetsuya Yamagami pic.twitter.com/2zpmL5kVnD
