Last June, YouTube announced that Picture-in-Picture (PiP) would be coming to its iPhone and iPad apps, with wide availability for Premium subscribers and free users just days away in the US.

How to use it: Simply select a YouTube video to watch and then exit the YouTube app (by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or by pressing the home button). The video will continue to play in the mini player that you can move around your device’s screen while using other apps.

A month after last year’s announcement, Google allowed YouTube Premium subscribers to turn it on manually. This test ended in April 2022 and the company hasn’t said anything about PiP’s availability since then.

YouTube is now poised to widely roll out picture-in-picture support “over the next few days” for devices running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or higher. It doesn’t work on several devices we tested today.

We understand that this has been a slow rollout of a much-requested feature, and we want to thank everyone who shared feedback during the experiments (including recently on youtube.com/new) and waited patiently for this moment!

YouTube PiP Availability

In terms of accessibility, all YouTube Premium subscribers on iPhone and iPad worldwide “will have access to PiP for all content (both music and non-music)”.

To enable this feature, go to Settings > General in the YouTube app and turn on Picture-in-Picture. If you do not enable PiP, you will still be able to use the default background playback (based on your feedback on our experiments)!

In the US, PiP is available to “anyone using the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad will have access to PiP for non-music content” with ads.
