The rumor was therefore true. While the collective Vx-underground reported this Monday, July 11 information that Bandai Namco would have been the victim of a computer attack, we were still waiting for the reaction of the principal concerned. It is now done. The publisher of Elden Ring has indeed published a statement confirming the veracity of these allegations.
Bandai Namco has been the target of ransomware
We thus learn that the facts are recent since the publisher specifies that the attack dates back only to July 3. Is this a massive hack? What data was stolen? The simple players that we are are entitled to ask these questions.
Bandai Namco made it clear that only the Asian branch of the company was affected. Where things are a little more surprising is that the information collected only concerns activities relating to the category “Toys and Hobbies”. However, this could mean that certain sensitive information concerning customer records could be made available to everyone on the net.
The person or persons behind this attack have formally demanded a ransom from Bandai Namco so that this does not happen, but it is not known if the latter will respond positively.
For the time being, the Japanese firm is still evaluating the extent of the damage, but intends to put in place all the necessary measures so that this type of incident does not happen again.
Bandai Namco is unfortunately not the first victim of this kind of scheme. Capcom or CD Projekt have also paid the price in the past.
On July 3, 2022, Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. confirmed that it had experienced unauthorized third-party access to the internal systems of several group companies in Asian regions.
After confirming unauthorized access, we took actions such as blocking access to servers to prevent further damage.
In addition, it is possible that information relating to customers of the Toys and Hobby business in Asian regions (excluding Japan) has been included in servers and PCs, and we are currently in the process of identifying the state of the existence of the leak, the extent of the damage, and to investigate the cause.
We will continue to investigate the cause of this incident and will release the results of the investigation as appropriate. We will also work with external organizations to strengthen security across the group and take action to prevent this from happening again.
We sincerely apologize to all involved for any complications or concerns caused by this incident.
