The Nothing phone was released this week, and its most distinctive design feature is a transparent back cover that reveals the innards of the device, as well as some fancy lights. Now you can give your iPhone 13 Pro Max the same look with the new Dbrand skin…
The Dbrand iPhone skin mimics Nothing Phone
Dbrand is known for being snarky, and the iPhone skin is no exception: the company has named it Something and suggests that Something is better than Nothing.
The special edition skin is currently only available for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Pixel 6 Pro, and Samsung S22 Ultra, but the company told The Verge that more versions will follow.
Here’s how the company presents the skin, which is also available as a case:
Better than nothing.
Minimalism for the masses.
Imagine that you are trying to enter the smartphone market. It turns out that having less money than Apple is a little more difficult. Availability? Limited. Supply? Limited. Even with a design so compelling that people pay ridiculous markups on StockX, no one can get their hands on your fancy new flashlight. To top it all off, the assholes at dbrand have copied your design and are making it for the competition. Sorry Carl.
Someone may accuse us of stealing. Here’s our counter: we didn’t steal anything. After all, we’ve spent a lot of time looking into the internal hardware thanks to our Teardown initiative. As a result, we are uniquely qualified to take industrial design aesthetics and “creatively rethink” them for other devices. This is not theft – this is plagiarism, which is definitely not a crime. We checked.
Dbrand even mimics the typography of the Nothing website.
The Verge notes that the reference to the legality of the move is another aspect of the brand’s personality.
Last year, he even received a cease and desist letter from Sony to release PS5 replacement side panels after Dbrand goaded them on the product page with the message: “Go ahead and sue us.” Dbrand later redesigned the plates to not look like the official ones, and the product page is now titled “Checkmate Lawyers”. It remains to be seen if Nothing will sue Dbrand for something.
Here you can buy a skin or a grip case. Of course, if you want a skinless look, you can always use iFixit’s tearing wallpaper instead.
Phone (1)
As for the Nothing Phone, our sister site says it’s clearly inspired by the iPhone.
From afar, Nothing Phone (1) certainly looks like the iPhone 12/13 series, but it has double glass panels but is rated IP53 water and dust resistant.
Another notable feature on the back of Nothing’s phone is a row of LED strips, which the company calls the Glyph interface. Different templates correspond to different ringtones and notification sounds, and can also be used for other purposes.
The brightest and biggest advantage of the Nothing phone (1) are the luminous “Glyph” strips under the transparent glass panel on the back of the device. You can’t fully customize the backlight, instead use preset patterns for individual apps or contacts.
Ringtones: Pneumatics, Abra, Plot, Beetle, Squirrels, Clicks, Radiation, Tennis, Coding, Doodles. Notification sounds: Oi!, Lamp 1, Lamp 2, Guiro, Volley, Squiggle, Insulator, Gamma, Beak, None. Charging indicator – When using a wired charging cable, the light bar above the USB-C charging port will fill up to show the current charge level. Feedback from Google Assistant. The light bar above the USB-C charging port will animate to indicate that the Google Assistant is responding to reviews with the hot-word “Hey Google” or “OK Google.” Flip to Glyph is a Nothing OS clone of Flip to Shhh that puts your device into Do Not Disturb mode, turns off vibrations and sounds, and turns on light notifications when placed face down on a surface. Bedtime Schedule is a way to schedule the Glyph light to turn off during sleep or at set hours.
