According to Japanese media reports, Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced on the 15th that it will set up a director-level meeting with the Australian government to exchange views on the construction of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system. The first meeting will be held this year.
The name of the meeting is “Japan-Australia Telecom Strengthening Policy Dialogue”, and it is planned to discuss the new communication network “Open RAN”, submarine optical cable, satellite communication and other fields that can connect equipment and systems of multiple manufacturers.
According to reports, Japanese General Minister Kyoyuki Kaneko met with relevant officials in Australia and reached an agreement on the establishment of the meeting. The joint statement issued on the 15th emphasized the significance that in order to achieve a “free and open Indo-Pacific”, “the two countries will deepen cooperation on the resilience and security of communications”.
According to reports, in the field of 5G, Chinese communication equipment giant Huawei is leading in technology. Japan and others are wary of the construction of a communications network led by China.
