Alienware m17 R5 and x17 m2 will now be the first to come out with a 17 inch Full HD resolution LCD monitor that can reach 480 Hz. Yes, you read that right, 480 Hz. It’s an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti that will take the panel to such levels, if you can find a game for it!

It was not long ago that 144 Hz was considered fast for a computer monitor. Now 480 Hz is the new record, at least for a laptop. It’s only 20 Hz lower than the 500 Hz that Asus should have reached in a computer monitor that they showed earlier this year. Now it is Dell and the company’s Alienware brand that will be the first to 480 Hz in a laptop, specifically two laptops. Alienware m17 R5 and Alienware x17 m2 both have monitors where 480 Hz is an option. Of course, the extreme options are not the only ones. The simplest model has a Full HD resolution 165 Hz panel while the intermediate option can reach 360 Hz, even in Full HD resolution. Finally, for users in need of higher resolution, there is a version with 4K UHD resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. The 4K screen also has 500 nits of brightness, instead of 300 nits in the Full HD panels.

Pick and choose!

Alienware generally offers tremendous customization in its hardware. An example is the graphics card which can be an RTX 3060, RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3080 Ti, RX 6700M or RX 6859M which draws between 140 and 175 watts. When it comes to CPU, the freedom of choice is not quite as great. After many previous years of Intel exclusivity, Alienware now continues to invest wholeheartedly in AMD by not even offering an Intel version. Customers can instead choose between AMD Ryzen 7 6800H and Ryzen 9 6900HX. For RAM, DDR5 memories on 4,800 MHz are between 16 and 64 GB, while the storage space can be configured from 512 GB to 4 TB.

With thick components, the computer also gets thick. Alienware m17 R5 measures 22.6 millimeters in thickness and weighs 3.3 kilograms. The weight will be at least a little easier to tolerate with a new GaN charger that Alienware sells. It weighs 25 percent less than before and is 45 percent smaller.

For those of you who are interested in Dell’s fast screens, it may be worth considering which game you can actually reach such high frame rates with. Of course, some games can be heavy to push so high due to high load, but some games are not even designed for that and lack graphics engines that can handle it without problems.

Alienware m17 R5 is ready to be ordered from Dell’s website right now. The base model costs SEK 23,000 and the upgrade to the 480 Hz panel costs SEK 2,500. On Dell’s website, it is only possible to combine the 480 Hz screen with Nvidia graphics cards. With an RTX 3080 Ti, a 480 Hz screen and other fully loaded specifications, the computer lands at SEK 51,000. There is no delivery date yet.
