“Remotion” for Spotify is a new Mac app with features similar to SharePlay.

Remotion is a macOS-only Spotify client that works similar to Apple SharePlay, but for audio and video calls with friends or colleagues. With the app, you can listen to music and talk like you’re right next to them – and the best part is that Remotion works even with those who don’t have Spotify Premium.

Remotion manages your Spotify app locally. According to the developers, the application provides better sound quality, as well as the ability to edit playlists together and control the volume of their own music better than Zoom.

In Remotion Room, you can gather your friends or colleagues and share your Spotify listening experience with them. But even if you’re not the session’s DJ, you can pause the song when you need to talk to someone near you – and then have it sync with the rest of the group when you return – or the app just adjusts everyone’s volume. so you can talk over the music without echoing or distracting them.

For those who don’t pay for Spotify, users will still hear ads and then they’ll sync again with the rest of the group. Premium is not required.

Here’s how Remotion works:

We started with voice chat (and camera or screen sharing, if you like). But the devil is in the details: how do you make sure the music doesn’t echo when people aren’t muted? Can people hear each other through music? The answer was deceptively simple: turn down the music when people are talking. After a ton of iterations, headphones are optional, mute is optional. And it sounds like everyone is famous – or giving GPS driving directions – your choice.

While this Spotify client is ultimately the place where you can call colleagues or friends, the developers say that “the default settings and shortcuts allow you to spend most of your session in silence with the camera turned off. Just enjoy the music and the company.”

Remotion on macOS is free while the developers are testing the beta – it’s unclear if this will require a subscription or just a single in-app purchase. In the meantime, it’s worth a try.
