In September 2021, a remake of Knights of the Old Republic was announced for PC and Playstation 5. The project has now been postponed indefinitely after some uproar at developer Aspyr Media, according to insider Jason Schreier.

According to journalist and insider Jason Schreier, there appears to be trouble at Aspyr Media. The studio is currently working on a remake of Knights of the Old Republic. The RPG was originally published by Bioware and Lucasarts in 2003. Aspyr Media should develop a remake for PC and Playstation 5 together with Saber Interactive. The project is said to have been postponed indefinitely.

Studio bosses are said to be dissatisfied with the work

Schreier reports that Aspyr completed a vertical slice of the remake in late June to show executives at Lucasfilm and Sony. A vertical slice is something like a demo that presents all planned features. The developers are said to have been enthusiastic about the project and believed they were on the right track. The week after the presentation, art director Jason Minor and design director Brad Prince are said to have been fired from the studio. Prince said on his LinkedIn page that he was surprised by the termination.

The reason for the trouble is said to have been the Vertical Slice. Sources have reported that Aspyr’s studio bosses weren’t happy with the state of the game or the amount of time and money that went into its development. The studio is said to have recently informed its staff that the remake of Knights of the Old Republic is on hold and that the company will be looking for new contracts and development opportunities. The remake was supposed to be out by the end of 2022, according to a person familiar with the production. A more realistic target would be 2025.
