For now, the rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro are pretty strong when it comes to the new display, which is expected to not only have a new design, but also support Always On mode. And while previous versions of iOS 16 already had a few references to the new persistent mode, now even the system wallpapers have been updated to take advantage of this new technology.
If you are unfamiliar with always-on display, this technology allows the system to continue to display some information on the screen, such as the clock, while consuming very little battery power. Some Android smartphones already have always-on displays, and Apple Watch Series 5 and later also have the same technology.
Even before WWDC 2022, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had already reported that iOS 16 would be ready for a new always-on mode that it is expected to be exclusive to iPhone 14 Pro models.. This is because this year’s models will reportedly get a new display with a variable refresh rate that drops to 1Hz per second. As a result, it should consume less power than current displays.
Found several references to always-on display support in iOS 16, which confirms all the rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro. There’s even an internal mode that Apple uses to test the always-on mode in the iPhone 13.
iOS 16 wallpapers are ready for permanent display
When it comes to always-on display Android smartphones, this feature works pretty much the same for all of them. You get a black screen with a clock and sometimes widgets. With the new lock screen in iOS 16, it’s clear that the iPhone will likely follow a similar approach. However, Apple may be working on something else for the iPhone 14 Pro.
Based on iOS 16 beta 4 internal files, found that the system wallpaper is now ready for this new always-on display mode. As we explained earlier, iOS 16 no longer uses static images as wallpapers. Instead, the new wallpapers are layered vectors rendered in real time.
Now, in addition to regular vectors, native wallpapers (such as the default wallpaper and the newly added clownfish wallpaper) also have a new state labeled “Dream” with very dark and faded elements. Wallpapers in this state are very similar to Apple Watch faces with always-on mode enabled.
As soon as the user turns off the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro, the wallpaper will switch to the “sleeping” version. We were able to reproduce the new behavior, which you can see below:
Basically, it looks like Apple will replicate the same Apple Watch effect on the iPhone 14 Pro. This means users will still see their wallpaper even when the screen is off. The wallpaper will be displayed at full brightness as soon as the user touches the screen or presses the power button.
Of course, on a real device, the clock and widgets selected by the user will also be visible when the screen is “off”.

Apple is expected to introduce four new iPhone models this year. However, only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a faster chip and a new screen design with a pill-shaped notch instead of a notch. Rumor has it that this year’s Pro models will get a new 48-megapixel camera capable of shooting 8K video.
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will also get the biggest front-facing camera update in years, with a new lens with a larger f/1.9 aperture and autofocus for better low-light performance.
As for the regular iPhone 14 models, they should be based heavily on the current iPhone 13 hardware with minor camera upgrades, bigger batteries, and 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB. The most notable update to the mid-range lineup this year will be the replacement of the “mini” model with a new 6.7-inch “iPhone 14 Max” screen.
New iPhones are likely to be announced this fall.
