After references in iOS 16 to a mode always on, the “standby” wallpapers offered by Apple and the rumors of a screen oscillating between 1 Hz and 120 Hz, here is an additional clue unearthed in the latest beta of Xcode 14 seems to confirm once again the inclusion of an always-on screen in the iPhone 14 Pro. While testing the creation of a widget for the iOS 16 lock screen, the developer @rhogelleim has indeed noticed an intriguing detail: his widget did not disappear completely once the screen “off” in the preview generated by Xcode.

Messing around with lock screen widgets/accessory and Xcode SwiftUI preview is showing the always on display.
This circle is filled as red in my code.

Instead of a completely black screen, the locked iPhone preview showed the date, time, and a low-contrast version of the widget in question (the widget was gray instead of red). This behavior of Xcode can of course still change between now and the release of iOS 16, but there is now even less room for doubt.
