The Apple Mail app offers different mailboxes that aren’t visible by default, and depending on the email provider you’re using, you’ll have different options. Some of the optional hidden mailboxes include Starred, Unread, VIP, To or Cc, Attachments, Thread Notifications, Today, Disabled Topics, All Drafts and others.
You may have noticed that the Apple Mail app lists several mailboxes that are commonly used or needed by most users, such as Unread, All Sent, Entire Trash, All Archives, and of course, each individual mailbox for email accounts. Additional mailboxes, disabled by default, may come in handy for some users, although, for example, there is a mailbox that only allows you to view emails with attachments. There’s also an inbox that only shows you unread emails so you don’t have to look for them in your main inbox.
Let’s see how to view some alternative mailboxes on your iPhone and iPad.

Regardless of the version of iOS or iPadOS your device is currently running, you can follow this procedure to view hidden mailboxes in the Mail app, as its user interface has remained largely unchanged over the years. Here’s what you need to do:
- First, launch the standard mail app from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
- After launching the application, you will usually be taken to your main inbox. Click “Mailboxes” in the top left corner of the screen to access the list of mailboxes.
- Here you will be able to see all the mailboxes that are visible by default. Then click “Edit” located on the top right corner of the menu as shown below.
- You have entered the mailbox editing menu. If you scroll down, you will see that many mailboxes are not verified. These are optional or hidden mailboxes. Just select the ones you want to view.
- Once you’ve selected your mailboxes by checking the boxes, click “Done” to save your changes to the Mail app.
- Now all the mailboxes that you have chosen to display will be displayed in the main menu of the application. At this point, just click on them to view all the emails stored in that particular mailbox.
