The rumor of a new Nintendo Switch resurfaced following a trademark filing by the Japanese giant with the European Union Office for Intellectual Property.

It’s an open secret, Nintendo is already working on a new console that will succeed (or complete) its catalog currently made up of Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch OLED and of course the original model. The big unknown remains the type of model that Big N will decide to launch, as well as its release date.

On June 29, Nintendo’s filing of the “NSW” name with the EUIPO revived rumors about a “New Nintendo Switch”, which is reminiscent of certain consoles from the Japanese manufacturer such as the New Nintendo 2DS XL, to name a few.

A new Nintendo Switch presented at the end of 2022?

The registered name “NSW” covers a wide range of products and services offered by Nintendo such as boxed video games, downloadable titles, card games, music files, game controllers and consoles. By proceeding in this way, Nintendo is preparing for the future and protecting itself from any exploitation of this name by other brands. Like its competitors, Nintendo is in the research and development phase to design its next game console.

Another interesting element to analyze concerns the strong increase in stocks and materials and supplies of the company in just one year. Thus, Nintendo had 9,533 million yen spent on its inventory at the end of the financial year in March 2021. This figure increased to 66,517 million yen in March 2022. An impressive increase which suggests that the company is currently working on new material.

It remains to know the launch window of the next console. The Switch OLED was released in October 2021 and some sources are talking about the presentation of a new model in the same period this year, thus using all the stocks before the end of the following financial year (March 2023).

All of this is obviously to be taken with a grain of salt. Indeed, Nintendo plays big. With more than 110 million users on current Nintendo Switch models, making the transition to a new generation of Switch will not be an easy task for the Japanese manufacturer.
