In his latest analysis, Ming-Chi Kuo says that China’s Sunny Optical will become the largest supplier of 7P wide-angle lenses for the iPhone 14 series, surpassing market consensus that Largan and Genius would be the most important suppliers for this generation.
Sunny Optical is still a new supplier for the Cupertino company as it became part of the iPhone supply chain last year. The firm is now responsible for most of the 7P wide-angle lenses for the iPhone 14 series. Kuo explains:
The distribution of shipments of Sunny Optical’s high-quality 7P wide-angle lens (used in the two expensive iPhone 14 Pros) and the budget 7P wide-angle lens (used in the two cheaper iPhone 14s) was 50-60% and 55-65%. , respectively. The supply share of Largan and Genius is approximately the same.
The analyst says that Sunny Optical has “significantly” increased its capacity, so it will continue the price war to get more orders and load capacity. In addition, for the iPhone 15 series, Sunny Optical may become the main supplier of the ToF lens in 2023.
Kuo gives a little more insight into what’s going on in the supply chain scenario for the iPhone 14 series:
The distribution of shipments of Sunny Optical’s high-quality 7P wide-angle lens (used in the two expensive iPhone 14 Pros) and the budget 7P wide-angle lens (used in the two cheaper iPhone 14s) was 50-60% and 55-65%. , respectively. The supply share of Largan and Genius is approximately the same.
The Largan’s 7P wide-angle ASP is 15-25% higher than Sunny Optical and Genius. Therefore, Sunny Optical’s market share increase has less of a negative impact on Largan’s bottom line.
The iPhone 14 series will feature major camera improvements. For example, analysts are expecting a 48MP wide sensor for the first time.
While the 48MP camera may unlock new features, it’s likely that Apple will continue to capture photos in the 12MP camera, which you can read about here. Regular iPhone 14 models will feature a 12-megapixel sensor in all lenses.
Kuo said in June that the Phone 14 will also be the most significant front-facing camera upgrade for an Apple smartphone in years. The analyst predicts that the new camera will be equipped with autofocus, which should result in significantly higher quality photos and videos compared to the current fixed focus camera. In addition, it also expects a large f/1.9 aperture.
