Apple’s upcoming update to Mac OS is called Mac OS Ventura. It’s supposed to be released this fall, but a beta version is already available today for keen developers and the curious. You may be wondering if you should upgrade or not. To help you out, here are five Ventura features—in addition to Stage Manager—that will change the way you do things on your Mac.

Email: Better search and undo sent messages

Apple is finally updating the search feature in Mail to make it easier to find what you’re looking for. In Mac OS Ventura, the search bar in Mail now displays recent emails, attachments, links, photos, and more. That should make it easier to find the exact email you’re looking for.

It’s just one of several new features. There’s also tracking, which places emails at the top of your inbox, and the ability to schedule when you want an email to be sent. Reminders can be set to return an opened email, so you can take care of it at a later time. Mail will also have an undo feature, where you have 10 seconds to take back a message. Overall, Mail takes a big step towards making email less of a burden and easier to use than it is today.

Continuity Camera: A better Facetime experience

The Mac has a glaring problem: A camera that doesn’t meet the demands of Mac users, with mediocre image quality and a lack of features. Even the updated cameras in the Imac, 14- and 16-inch Macbook Pro and Studio Display are just okay.

The iPhone, on the other hand, has great cameras, including the selfie camera. And with Mac OS Ventura, Macs can take advantage of the iPhone’s camera and use it in a feature called Continuity Camera. With that feature, you can instantly and wirelessly connect your iPhone to your Mac and use it in Facetime, Zoom, Webex and other video conferencing apps – meaning people you’re video conferencing with can end up degrading your image quality.

If you frequently record video of yourself, Continuity Camera has a feature that will literally add a new dimension to your creation. The Desk View function can simultaneously film you and the desk space in front of your screen. You’ll be able to do hands-on demonstrations without having to gnash your teeth over complicated camera settings. And it will impress everyone in a video conference.

Continuity Camera has an additional feature called Studio Light, which requires an iPhone 12 or later. This feature makes you look good by using the iPhone’s flash as light.

Continuity Camera confirms what we knew all along: iPhone is the best webcam for Mac.

Safari: No more passwords

The Internet is an infinite resource, but the number of accounts, usernames and passwords you need to use these resources is infinite. And why has it taken so long to implement something more secure than the password, like biometric verification?

We’re on the brink of a breakthrough with the new password feature in Mac OS Ventura’s Safari. Keys replaces typed passwords with Touch ID on a Mac. On the iPhone or iPad, you can use Face ID. No more searching for the unique password you create for each internet account.

Keys creates a digital key for each account, and that key is sent when you authenticate with Touch ID or Face ID. You can’t accidentally give out a password to a hacker, and they aren’t saved on the web, so they won’t be in any of the countless security breaches that happen. Apple works with the FIDO Alliance so passwords also work on non-Apple devices.

Focus: Helps you get things done

There’s so much you can do on your Mac, but having the discipline required for the task is ultimately up to you. However, Apple is trying to help with its Focus feature in Mac OS. In Ventura, Focus has a new filter feature, which helps place Apple apps in specific modes that you set, showing you only relevant information.

For example, if you create a focus mode called Work, you can set Calendar to show only your work tasks, Messages to only allow conversations from your “Work Colleagues” list in the Contacts app, and Safari to allow you to work with a specific tab group. You’ll also be able to schedule Focus to set a mode at a certain time of day.

Live Text: Copy text from videos

In Mac OS Monterey, Apple introduced Live Text, the ability to highlight text in an image and then copy it, look it up on the Internet, translate it, and more. Apple extends Live Text in Mac OS Ventura by adding support for video. You will be able to pause a video, select the text on the screen and perform the same functions you could before.
