Usually when the war in Ukraine is reported, it is about physical warfare. We don’t hear as much about the slightly more hidden war that takes place in the digital world. However, CNBC has taken a closer look at the damage the hacker collective Anonymous and their armada of hackers at various levels have caused to Russia.

According to CNBC, Anonymous’ attacks on Russia’s digital interests can be described as relatively successful. It describes how Anonymous has managed to carry out attacks against Russian interests on several different levels. These are divided into slightly different categories, such as data theft where Anonymous hacked and leaked information from thousands of databases with connections to Russia, digital attacks against companies that refuse to stop doing business with Russia, such as Nestle, overload attacks that caused services to fail to access in Russia, training of hacking recruits who want to participate in the digital war against Russia, hijacking of Russian TV channels and streaming services, and pure information campaigns directed at Russian citizens.

Experts CNBC has spoken with also believe that the Anonymous attacks have exposed weaknesses in the previously hyped cyber defenses that many believed Russia had. This does not seem to be the case at all, as several of Anonymous’ successful attacks against Russian interests have shown. Furthermore, it is believed that Anonymous has stolen and leaked so much data from their attacks that it will take years to go through the data, which in itself can also be a problem.

A big problem for Russia when it comes to Anonymous attacks is that they can pretty much only defend themselves. There is no government, state or other officially known organization behind the decentralized hacker collective. This means that Russia cannot threaten or carry out its own attacks on any large scale against Anonymous.
