Russian President Vladimir Putin has plans to equip the country’s navy with the lightning-fast Zirkon cruise robot that can reach a speed of 9,800 kilometers per hour.

Putin said in a speech on Sunday that the country’s navy will be equipped with the cruise robot Zirkon, reports the Russian news agency Interfax. The new weapons will be delivered in the coming months, according to Putin, who spoke during the Navy Day celebrations in St. Petersburg.

The Russian-developed Zirkon hypersonic naval target robot can reach mach 8, a speed of about 9,800 kilometers per hour, and can be launched from land, sea or from submarines.

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov will be the first ship to be equipped with the cruise robot, which, according to Putin, is “unparalleled in the world”.

– It has no boundaries, he says in his speech.

Before giving his speech, Putin signed a new naval doctrine which states, among other things, that Russia will “protect its national interests in the Atlantic and oppose NATO’s attempts to advance its military infrastructure to Russian borders”.
