The expected differences between base iPhone 14 models and Pro models continue to grow. Not only will ProMotion displays be limited to Pro models, but even the pixels themselves will reportedly be higher quality in top-tier models, a new report says today.
Display supplier Samsung is reportedly using the highest quality OLED materials for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the base two models will use lower quality materials…
Differences Between Base iPhone 14 Models and Pro Models
We expect a number of differences between this year’s base models and Pro iPhone models.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is said to have a new design, improved cameras, and even a better processor. This phone will also feature a high-quality stainless steel and glass finish, telephoto lens, LiDAR scanner, and ProMotion technology.
Lacking all of these “premium” features, the iPhone 14 Plus/Max will cost less than $1,000, ideal for those who want a larger iPhone without having to pay the “Pro” price, which starts at $1,099.
But a new supply chain report suggests that’s not all.
Pixel difference too
It is reported by “Electric”.
Samsung Display will use different grades of materials on the OLED panels it will produce for the upcoming iPhone 14 series, according to TheElec, depending on the level of the model.
It will use its latest and most advanced material kit for higher-end iPhone 14 models, while it will use the previous generation kit for lower-end models, sources said. According to them, this step is done to save money. […]
The OLED material set consists of dopant, base, primer, and other materials used to form red, green, and blue pixels. […]
Samsung Display will use its M11 material kit for the standard 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models of the iPhone 14 series. [while] the two higher-end models in the iPhone 14 series will use the Samsung Display M12 material set.
It seems unlikely that the average iPhone user will notice much of a difference, if at all, but it proves that Apple intends the base and pro models to be increasingly different in both features and materials.
Goodbye mini; hi Plus/Max
Another key difference we’re expecting this year is that Apple will be phasing out the iPhone mini model that suffered from poor sales and replacing it with the opposite: a larger non-pro model with the same screen size as the Pro. Max.
Just two months after the release of the iPhone 12 line, a CIRP analyst report showed that the iPhone 12 mini accounted for just 6% of iPhone sales in those first two months. […]
In fact, the iPhone 12 mini, despite being one of the new “flagship” iPhones, was often outsold by older models, including the iPhone SE, iPhone 11, and iPhone XR.
The iPhone 13 mini was released in September 2021, and despite improvements in battery life and display brightness, sales were still sluggish. The latest CIRP data showed that the iPhone 13 mini accounted for just 3% of all iPhone sales in the second quarter. […]
The iPhone 14 (codenamed D27 and D28) will be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch form factors. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (codenamed D73 and D74) will also be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch form factors.
If you want an iPhone mini, the iPhone 13 mini is expected to remain on sale, possibly with a price cut after the launch of the iPhone 14.
