It has officially been a year since I became an Apple user. Now, as an Apple blogger, it’s time to reflect on the experience as I look at it from a unique perspective.
Background
Android has always been my favorite phone. I bought into the stigma that Apple was too expensive and I found them unaffordable. As someone who has studied its products, I have never owned it. I didn’t even know much about Apple devices.
When buying my first budget smartphone as a college student, I was impressed with the camera and the size of the Samsung Galaxy lineup. The small size and square shape of the iPhone repulsed me like royalty. I had an Android tablet at the time, so I felt comfortable staying in the Android family. Also, all of the non-smartphones I previously owned were Samsung; and these devices were good for me.
However, everything changed last year when I became an Apple user for the first time.
Reasons for switching to Apple products
Back in July 2021, I found myself at a local Verizon store and was in desperate need of an upgrade. My current phone at the time was a Samsung Galaxy S7 which I bought in 2016. This made my phone five years old when I finally upgraded. Although I was thinking about the iPhone in 2016, I had to buy my S7 in a hurry and I wasn’t ready for this transition yet.
Over time, I got tired of how slow the S7 got and was ready for a faster and more modern device. YouTube has become a source of knowledge when it comes to researching phones. While researching the iPhone 12, I finally found an iPhone that I thought looked good and matched my desire for a simple interface.
iPhone made a deal
When I was at Verizon, I went through all the deals with a great sales rep looking to find the right package for me. We settled on a purple iPhone 12, which gave me a special discount on the Apple Watch SE. What also pushed me to the iPhone was the fact that a few hours later I had an interview at a local Apple Store. Fun fact, the very first call I received on my very first iPhone was from Apple itself!
A month later, I started working as a specialist in the Apple Store. You are probably thinking; how did a person with no experience with Apple products get a job at the company? Perhaps my previous experience in the hospitality industry helped me. In the Apple Store, it’s more about your people skills than your knowledge of Apple. It also doesn’t hurt that I’m a former Walt Disney World employee and the hiring manager is a big Disney fan.
iOS is a culture shock for Apple’s first user
Switching from Android to iPhone was a complete culture shock for me. Navigating through iOS, I felt like I was in foreign territory. However, I got it right and started enjoying my new iPhone even though it was so easy to use.
One thing I especially miss about Android is a little blinking light that will alert me to a notification when my phone is in sleep mode. Even a year later, I still expect to see a blinking light telling me to check my phone.
Benefits of using Apple products
The iPhone is so simple. Its simplicity is so appealing that several members of my family switched to Apple last year as well. The integration of all my Apple devices is great; I never knew that the ecosystem of devices could be so well coordinated. Also, don’t get me started on a Mac!
A year later, I know all the ins and outs of my iPhone and I really enjoy the experience. In seven years of working with the Samsung Galaxy, I could hardly make a phone call for several days. Now it’s a relief for me to have a phone that doesn’t complicate my life and is a pleasure to use.
Products I have used
The Apple products I purchased last year include (thanks to an Apple Store discount):
Will I return to Android?
I would totally go back to Android. There is no specific reason; maybe I just miss the Samsung brand? I know people love the advanced customization features Android has to offer; I really don’t care. Now, when it comes to computers, I would totally go back to Windows as my main focus. Actually I still have an HP laptop and I like having both Windows and Mac.
My future as an Apple user
I was very happy for the year of my obsession with Apple. But there are a couple of things that I would like to change in my sophomore year.
Ideally I would like to work with an iPad which is more like a Mac. While I love the iPad, depending on what you’re doing, working without it can be awful. I use an iPad (9th gen) which is a fantastic tablet but not a heavy multitasking machine.
Another thing I’m looking forward to in my future as an Apple user is to become a more advanced camera user. Since the iPhone camera has been such a game changer, I need to know how to actually take good photos. If there are lovers of the iPhone camera, I would like to give advice.
When did you first become an Apple user? I’m curious to know what brought YOU to Apple devices? Let me know in the comments!
