Not since the Cold War has the nuclear threat been as great as it is now. The world is one small mistake away from being annihilated in a nuclear war, claims UN chief António Guterres.
– We have had unusual luck so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a safeguard against geopolitical tensions boiling over into a nuclear conflict, Guterres said ahead of the conference of countries that have signed the NPT non-proliferation treaty.
António Guterres urged nations to take “a new path towards a future without nuclear weapons”.
During the conference at the UN headquarters in New York, the Non-Proliferation Treaty will be revised for the tenth time, with the aim of strengthening and adapting it to the times in which we live.
– Eliminating nuclear weapons is the only guarantee that they will never be used, Guterres said.
Criticizes Russia
Ahead of the meeting, nuclear powers the US, France and Britain have called on Russia to end its “irresponsible and dangerous nuclear rhetoric and conduct, and fulfill its international commitments”.
In a separate statement, US President Joe Biden called on Russia and China to show their commitment to reducing their nuclear arsenals.
Biden is ready to negotiate a new disarmament agreement, New Start, with Russia.
– But negotiations require a partner who acts with good intentions. Russia’s brutal and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has shattered the peace in Europe and constitutes an attack on fundamental international principles, Biden said.
Putin: No winners
Russia assumes that there are no winners in a nuclear war and one should never be started, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded in a statement to the meeting.
“As a signatory to the NPT, Russia consistently adheres to the text and spirit of the treaty,” Putin said in the speech, which appears on the Kremlin’s website.
At the last conference in 2015, the participating countries failed to agree on several important points.
In January this year, five nuclear-armed nations, of which Russia was one, pledged to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and to avoid nuclear war. Since Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, President Putin has repeatedly threatened nuclear weapons.
