Given the successful AirPods lineup, it’s only natural for users to wonder when Apple will release the next generation of AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Head down below as we round up the latest rumors on when to expect a new version of each of these products…

When will Apple release AirPods Pro 2?

Rumors about the next AirPods Pro model have been circulating for more than a year. It is currently believed that Apple will not change the design of these headphones. The 52audio post, which correctly predicted the design of the AirPods 3, reveals that the second generation AirPods Pro 2 will likely have a similar design to the current generation, but with redesigned ear tips.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously said that these headphones could be similar to the Beats Studio Buds. In terms of fitness sensors, the company’s research shows how AirPods can be used to monitor breathing rates.

In the report, Apple and Cornell researchers used model-based technology to estimate human respiratory rate using short audio clips taken after exercise in healthy adults. Data was collected from 21 people who used near-field headphones with a microphone before, during, and after strenuous exercise.

The study found that this sound could be a “viable signal for passive assessment” of respiratory rate, which also makes it a more cost-effective way to do so compared to traditional healthcare.

Another change expected for the AirPods Pro in 2022 is a redesigned charging case that will reportedly remain 21mm thick, 46mm high and 54mm wide. By comparison, the current AirPods Pro charging case is 45.2mm high and 60.6mm wide.

In a December report, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo backed up Gurman’s words, saying the new AirPods Pro will come out in late 2022 with a “significantly upgraded” chip.

He also said that the new AirPods Pro could support Lossless thanks to new technology:

We expect Apple to release the AirPods Pro 2 in Q4 2022 with new benefits including a new form factor design, Apple Lossless Format (ALAC) support, and a charging case that can make a sound for users to track. We are optimistic about demand for AirPods Pro 2 and expect shipments to reach 18-20 million units in 2022.

Sources confirm that the next-generation AirPods Pro, codenamed B698, will feature the next version of the H1 chip, Apple’s own audio processor. In addition, mentions of LC3 codec support in the AirPods Max beta firmware hint that the AirPods Pro 2 may be the first to add support for Bluetooth 5.2, which will bring more stability and efficiency to wireless headphones.

In addition, Kuo also believes that Apple is likely to discontinue the original AirPods Pro when the second generation is released:

AirPods 3 orders for Q2-Q3 2022 have been reduced by 30%+. Due to a failed product segmentation strategy, demand for AirPods 3 is significantly lower than for AirPods 2. AirPods Pro may be discontinued after Apple releases AirPods Pro 2 in 2H22 to avoid repeating the same mistake.

When will Apple release the new AirPods Max?

For the older model AirPods Max, released by the end of 2020, Apple has no plans to release the second generation yet.

Users are expecting Apple to announce a new model since the company released lossless quality support on Apple Music last June, and AirPods Max technically can’t play that quality even over a wired connection.

The $549 AirPods Max are expected to stay the same for some time, but Gurman revealed in May that Apple could only plan new colors for the AirPods Max:

“Apple has only recently met demand for the product and is not currently working on the second generation of AirPods Max, although it is discussing the launch of additional color variations in the future.”

When will Apple release AirPods 4?
