The gaming market is growing and with it the demand for playable content – game – the association of the German games industry – has now analyzed based on data from the market research company GfK: “6 out of 10 PC and console games in Germany were downloaded in 2021 Bought.” Specifically, the share was 59 percent and thus increased by one percentage point compared to the previous year.

Price and platform are the main factors here: Cheaper titles are downloaded far more often than higher-priced titles, and PC gamers also press the convenient download button more often than long-established console users. Keyword price: “68 percent of all games with a sales price of 30 euros or more were purchased on data carriers in online stores or in stationary stores in 2021,” game announces.

In the area of PC games, only 7% were bought on data carrier in 2021, in comparison, console gamers reached for the disc or cartridge version of their favorite titles in 64% of the cases. What could be the reason? According to game Managing Director Felix Falk, the general increase can be attributed to easier access to online content. The fact that the discrepancy between the platforms is so large suggests that sales and a large selection of indie titles on the PC lure downloads, while console lovers tend to put games on the shelves with their various editions and collector’s bonuses to want.

Gaming is no longer a niche topic

In general, video games are reaching an ever-growing audience, so it is hardly surprising that sales in the area of games, games hardware and fees for gaming online services increased by around 17% last year to EUR 9.8 billion compared to the previous year. It is particularly noteworthy that in 2020, the year of the Corona outbreak, not only a strong jump in game purchases via download could be observed, but also a general sales growth of a historic 32%.
