Every year, presenting a new operating system, Apple does not name all the innovations that lie under the hood. With the release of beta versions, users begin the quest to find improvements that the Cupertinos have hidden from view. Here with iOS 16 got the same story. At WWDC 2022, Apple showed only the most important innovationswithout stopping at small improvements.

In iOS 16, many useful features are hidden from the eyes of the user, but if you find them, you can get a completely different experience from your smartphone.

With the release iOS 16 betas users found the system to automatically change lock screens, found a tactile keyboard, speaking notifications through speakers, Apple Music improvements and a built-in converter. Let’s see how these innovations work.

Converter for iPhone

We are waiting for a similar function in third-party messengers in the next updates.

If you have to communicate with colleagues, friends or relatives from another country where other units of measurement are used, then now you do not have to convert the data sent to you via the Internet. In iOS 16, Apple added to all native applications unit converter. When you receive a message containing the distance in miles, then by clicking on the number, you can get the result in the usual kilometers.

Moreover, the system can translate not only distance, but also weather, weight, volume, time zones and currencies. For watches, it is supported to create an event in the calendar according to your time. The main disadvantage of the converter is that it understands unitswritten in Latin. Most likely, this is a glitch in the beta version and everything will be fixed by the release.

By the way, this and all other functions presented in today’s material can only be viewed on iOS betas 16 for developers. We do not recommend installing such a system on the main device due to possible glitches and general instability. In the event that you still decide to install, do not forget to make backup copies.

Notification Voice – iPhone

Finally, Siri can really be useful.

iOS 15 introduces the ability to speak notifications when you’re wearing headphones or in a car. There are not so many models in the list of supported headphones for this function:

  • Airpods 2.
  • AirPods 3.
  • AirPods Pro.
  • AirPods Max.
  • Beats Solo Pro.
  • Powerbeat Pro.
  • powerbeats.

Starting with iOS 16, speaking notifications became possible through the speaker of the smartphone. Calls, messages and notifications from applications adapted for this function are available for the announcement. To enable, follow these steps:

  • Open settings.
  • Select “Siri and Search”.
  • Tap on “Announce Notifications”.
  • Activate the “Announce Notifications” feature.
  • Return to the previous menu and activate “Announce calls”.

Three modes are available for the announcement:

  • Is always. All notifications are spoken.
  • Headphones and car. Notifications are only spoken through headphones or when using CarPlay.
  • Headphones only. Notifications are only spoken if you are wearing headphones.

A very handy feature that will allow you not to check the phone in anticipation of something important. Everything will be announced with Siri.

Apple Music update

The changes to Apple Music are minimal but nice.

Not spared new features and branded music Apple streaming service music. The first thing that will catch the eye of playlist users is the ability to sort songs by title, artist, album, and release date. Previously, they were formed only by the date the song was added or by manually transferring tracks within the playlist.

Has changed cover design. Now it has become more rounded. The widget on the lock screen began to display the icon of the device through which the playback is being performed – HomePod, AirPods and even wired headphones. To add a song to the play queue, you can simply drag and drop it there.

It became possible to use the function Personalized Spatial Audio, which we discussed in a separate article. It allows you to adjust the depth of sound specifically for your ear. Apple Music has undergone more of a cosmetic change. This service has not received anything fundamentally new in iOS 16.

iOS 16 Tactile Keyboard

After turning on the tactile signals of the keyboard, the sound can be turned off, because it works in all modes where there is vibration.

Many iOS users have complained that when using their iPhone in Silent mode, it is very difficult to type messages blindly. The iPhone has always had the ability to turn on only the keyboard sound, which for many users was not enough.

In iOS 16, it became possible to activate haptic signals that involve Taptic Engine when typing. Thus, if your iPhone is constantly muted, turning on haptic feedback will help you type with fewer errors. At least you will be sure that you clicked on the letter.

To enable keyboard tactile signals:

  • Open settings.
  • Go to the “Sounds, tactile signals” section.
  • Scroll down and open Keyboard Response.
  • Activate the “Haptic Signals” switch.

After these actions, each touch of the keyboard will be accompanied by a reaction from the Taptic Engine.

How to Change the Lock Screen – iPhone

Don’t be afraid to experiment with focus modes and lockscreens. This will allow you to get the best experience from new features.

the loudest iOS 16 innovation customizable lock screens. Apple told in sufficient detail and showed them at the presentation. But the fact that they can automatically change each other depending on the focus mode was not announced.

Set your wallpaper and display time for each lockscreen and never go blind at night trying to see what time it is.

In order to set up automatic change of lock screens depending on the time or geolocation, it is necessary:

  • Create lockscreens that you will later link to focus modes. How to change and create lock screens on iOS 16, we talked about in a separate article.
  • Go to settings.
  • Open the “Focus” section.
  • Click on the “+” and select “Custom”.
  • Set the mode as you like, and in the “Screen settings” section, select the desired lockscreen.
  • Scroll down a bit and click the “Add Automation” button.
  • In this section, you can set the display time of this lock screen with the days of the week or the desired location.

When you activate the geolocation for the home, you can configure one lockscreen, and another for work.

After that, the lockscreen you have chosen will appear strictly at the specified time or upon arrival at a certain place.

As it turned out, after the first beta versions of iOS 16 received significantly more improvements and new features than was shown at the presentation. Let’s hope that with the next beta it will be possible to find something more interesting. And what is already there, the developers will bring to the ideal.
