One of the most interesting features of iOS 16 is passwords. This feature wants to remove the password since users will only need to authenticate the login with their face or fingerprint. While Passkeys won’t launch with iOS 16 next month, Apple talked about that passwordless future in a new interview.

Here’s how passwords will work with iOS 16, as previously reported:

For users, signing in with a password will work much the same as signing in with iCloud Keychain and Face ID or Touch ID. You just choose your credentials, authenticate with biometrics, and that’s it. However, while iCloud Keychain basically automatically fills in your username and password into regular text fields, the passkey goes way beyond that.

The system generates a unique key that can only be accessed if the user is authenticated via Face ID or Touch ID. This prevents malicious websites from trying to steal your passwords because the access keys are stored securely in the iCloud keychain and are not visible to the user.

In an interview with Tom’s Guide, Apple Senior Director of Platform Marketing Kurt Knight and VP of Internet Technology Darin Adler explained how passwords can really make passwords obsolete.

For an Apple VP, passwords can be a mixed bag as they are “the key to securing everything we do online” but they are also “one of the biggest attack vectors and security vulnerabilities that users face today.”

Apple claims that with the help of the Passkeys feature in iOS 16, it will be able to solve this problem.

“Face ID and Touch ID verification gives you the convenience and biometrics that we can get from an iPhone. You don’t need to buy another device, but you don’t even need to acquire a new habit,” said Darin Adler.

One of the reasons users might be skeptical is related to cross-platform, since what should a user do when they need to log into a set-top box that is not an Apple TV, or even when they are on a Windows/Android device? ? Here’s how Apple plans to address this issue:

The cross-platform experience is very simple,” Knight said. “So, let’s say you have an iPhone, but you want to go and sign in to your Windows computer. You will be able to get a QR code, which you can then simply scan with your iPhone, and then you can use Face ID or Touch ID on your phone.”

The Tom’s Guide says that Apple is currently working with developers to integrate password support into its apps, though the company may announce which apps will be available at launch. You can watch the full interview here, as well as some exclusive images of the Passkeys feature in action here.
