Some films on Netflix and in the cinema are hard to resist. That a new movie from Marvel is here? You don’t miss that. But the film showed me how important marketing is Apollo 10½ shown by director Richard Linklater. I actually love his movies (the Before trilogy, Everybody Wants Some, School of Rock) and can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. But I didn’t even notice the release of Apollo 10 ½ at first! Because the film hardly got any marketing. And that’s pretty damn unfair, because after seeing it I realized: I just got two hours nostalgic for someone else’s nostalgia – wow. But what is Apollo 10 ½ anyway? What is this film about?
What is Apollo 10 ½ about?
The Apollo 10 ½ plot question is a fun one because the Netflix film by director Richard Linklater comes with practically no significant story. Actually, it’s about 10-year-old Stanley, who grew up in Houston, Texas in the 1960s. He is enthusiastic about space travel and the Americans’ upcoming trip to the moon. Surprisingly, however, he is said to land on the moon before Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins – the test module for charging the moon turned out to be too small and only intended for a child. At the same time, we get a great insight into everyday life in the 1960s. And that’s what the film lives on, because it’s just cosy.

Coming-of-age story without a crass story
As in his other cult films such as Dazed & Confused and Everybody Wants Some, the director succeeds in this rippling feel-good factor. There are no shocking revelations, no groundbreaking story development. Instead, we see how dangerous chlorine-polluted pools were in Stanley’s youth. How absurd it was when children cycled behind pest control trucks or which programs dominated the TV landscape. As well as tricks when visiting the drive-in cinema! Always with a certain wink, but also with a tangible love for this past, albeit flawed time. Linklater stages this in such a playful way that the whole thing is often reminiscent of films by Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch) – including symmetrical detail shots or the idea of myriads of slanting figures.

Unusual look – don’t be put off!
So if you don’t feel like horror, touching drama or action fireworks on an evening, then this film is highly recommended. If you have even the slightest interest in “Americana”, the 60s or the space race to the moon, you will get your money’s worth. Don’t be put off by the unusual look – this is actually a live action film, but with an animation filter on top. This one is hit and miss when it comes to faces, but also conjures up fantastic landscape images and snapshots on your screen that you could print out right away.
