Being able to watch YouTube in picture-in-picture mode on a Mac isn’t new, but it’s new to me. Apple added native picture-in-picture video support to Safari on Mac back in 2016, and YouTube has supported it since day one. The option is hidden behind a couple of clicks…

I’ll be the first to admit that most of you reading this probably already know how to enable picture-in-picture mode on the YouTube website in Safari. For those of you who, like me, have lived without it for more than four years, this article is for you.

It looks like YouTube wants to hide the ability to view videos in picture-in-picture mode. As we’ve seen on the iPhone and iPad, YouTube isn’t committed to providing its users with the ability to easily watch videos anywhere outside of YouTube’s native app or website. However, unlike iOS, YouTube’s efforts have gone so far.

How to Use YouTube Picture-in-Picture in Safari on Mac

Just a few steps to start watching YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode on Mac in Safari.

Open a YouTube video in Safari on your Mac as usual. Right click this YouTube video. When YouTube’s own context menu appears, right-click again.

After you right-click a second time, you’ll see a Safari menu that has an option called Enter Picture-in-Picture Mode. Selecting this option will move your YouTube video to Safari’s native picture-in-picture mode.

As a reminder, Safari’s picture-in-picture video player can be placed in any of the four corners of your Mac’s screen. You can resize the player as you like, play or pause the video, and link the video to a YouTube video in Safari.

That’s literally all it takes. I can’t believe it took me this long to figure out this feature exists. Please don’t scold me in the comments in the same way that my colleagues at Slack do.
