Square Enix’s Harvestella will be available not only for Nintendo Switch, but also for PC on Steam. The “life simulation RPG” crosses farm simulations like Story of Seasons with JRPG battles à la Tales of Berseria – and packs a special twist on top.
With Harvestella, Square Enix has the pipeline for the first time a “life simulation RPG” for Nintendo Switch and PC. But what we will see here from November 22, 2022 obviously wants to be more than just another homage to the well-known Story of Seasons series. Because far from the genre-typical cultivation and crafting excesses, Harvestella looks like a role-playing game from the Tales of series. The mostly idyllic, relatively open game world of Nemea is presented in an anime style that is not too cuddly; the first trailer also shows crisp real-time battles, as you might know them from Tales of Berseria or Monster Hunter Rise. The real specialty of Harvestella is a kind of fifth season, the Silentium.
Harvestella is not entirely idyllic
Harvestella is mainly about running a farm or “self-sufficient life” in the coastal town of Shatolla. So once again, fruits, vegetables and crops are grown in harmony with the seasons. However, with the Silentium – the season of death – a catastrophe threatens at every change of season. Then there is a deadly dust in the air, which ensures that crops wither and nobody can leave their house. What’s more, the Silentium seems to last longer with each passing year, so a good part of the game should revolve around restoring order. To do this (as well as to collect resources) you have to travel around the game world, which in travel mode is represented by a greatly zoomed out world map. In contrast to most other farm simulations, the Harvestella game world is home to several towns whose inhabitants can get to know each other better and can be won over to “the good cause” – i.e. your own party.

There are several classes to choose from for the player character, so far Square Enix has called fighters, shadow runners and magicians. The focus of the party adventure seems to be the exploration of dungeons, which are of course also controlled via the world map. In these undergrounds there should not only be information about the origin of the world, but also references to the true origin of the Silentium. Other features of Harvestella include a crafting system that has not yet been explained in detail, a cooking mechanic and the JRPG and life simulation mini-game par excellence: fishing.
