A new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently causing a lot of discussion. This describes a technical solution that would make it possible to use older accessories such as the DualShock 3 controller or the PlayStation 3 EyeToy camera on modern hardware such as the PlayStation 5.

As is well known, not only the new three-tiered PlayStation Plus model was launched last month. In addition, the PlayStation 5 has been provided with extensive backward compatibility.

This offers players the opportunity to download classics from the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 or the PlayStation Portable and play them on the PlayStation 5. PlayStation 3 games can only be used on the PS5 via the cloud. According to recent reports, developers at Sony Interactive Entertainment may be working on extending PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility.

At least that’s what a freshly published patent by the company suggests.

PS3 soon with a classic emulator?

The patent in question describes a technical solution that will make it possible to use various accessories on modern hardware such as the PlayStation 5. Strikingly, most of the accessories on display are from the PlayStation 3 era – including the DualShock 3 controller, the PlayStation Move controller, which is still used in PlayStation VR to this day, the EyeToy camera and more.

The patent could indicate that backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 3 is indeed being expanded. In the past few months, several insiders have reported that the option of playing PlayStation 3 classics via the cloud is only intended to be an interim solution. Just as is already the case with the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 or the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation 3 will also be provided with a classic emulator for the PlayStation 5 for the foreseeable future, which will allow PS3 titles to be downloaded.

Since Sony Interactive Entertainment has not yet issued an official statement on this subject, the rumors about extended backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 3 should of course be treated with the necessary caution for the time being. Especially since patents of this kind do not automatically mean that the solutions described will also be ready for series production.
