Nintendo has presented current business figures and has to cope with a sharp decline in sales of the switch. The background to this is the ongoing chip crisis.
In a financial report for the past first quarter of the current fiscal year, which will end on March 31, 2023, Nintendo had to accept a noticeable decline in sales. Overall, sales fell by 4.7 percent to 2.3 billion dollars, with this being attributable to both the video game area and the mobile sector.
The hardware sector is hit much harder, because sales of the otherwise popular switch fell by a whopping 22.9 percent to 3.43 million units sold in a quarterly comparison. On the one hand, this is due to the introduction of the more expensive OLED model, but on the other hand, above all, it is also due to the ongoing chip crisis. The global shortage of semiconductor components has also had a noticeable impact on the production of switch consoles. Accordingly, fewer consoles have been delivered, which has led to a drop in sales.
While the production targets could not be reached as planned due to the supply bottlenecks, Nintendo expects the situation to improve over the course of late summer into autumn. Then you could also dare a more detailed outlook for the rest of the calendar year.
Finally, Nintendo nevertheless emphasizes that the demand for the switch is stable in all regions around the world, even in its sixth year since the launch, and that they are accordingly preparing for a busy Christmas season in which they want to serve as many wishes as possible from potential end customers .
In the past 12 months, more than 100 million users have gambled on the switch; a total of 111.08 million units have now been sold since the original release.
