Even during the presentation of the very first iPad, Steve Jobs said that this is a great reading tool. More than ten years have passed since then. The iPad has changed a lot from what it was. The frames have become thinner, the weight is less, the screen is much better. Here’s a habit read on tablets didn’t go anywhere. A lot of people use the iPad as a reader. It is clear to use iPad Pro 12.9 on M1 only as an e-book is strange enough. However, in addition to the work, it is also a great e-reader with a large screen.

Apple presets book reading software on your tablets. However, many may lack its functionality or simply dislike the look. In this post, we’ll take a look at four of the best apps for reading books on the iPad.
Apple Books – iPad Reader
Apple Books is the standard reading app that Apple installs on all of its tablets. It covers the needs of a fairly large number of users. However, it also has its own limitations. Chief among which are support only Epub format and the lack of an Android version with cross-platform synchronization. For those who use exclusively Apple technology, the latter will not be a problem.
In the arsenal Apple Books there are many different fonts and text sizes for readability. Additionally, several themes are supported, including night, to reduce eye strain. Separately, it should be noted the ability to set reading goals and notifications about their achievement. For those who like to set themselves certain tasks based on the books they read, this will be a very good help.
Apple Books has a very convenient synchronization between all company devices. You can start reading on iPad, continue on Mac, and finish on iPhone. All bookmarks will move between gadgets automatically.
The Apple Reader has a built-in bookstore, but the choice in Russian is very small. Fortunately, you can add any Epub book.
To add a book to Apple Books and to any other program, you must:
- Download the book to iPad in the required format.
- Go to the Files app, Downloads folder.
- Click on the downloaded book.
- In the upper right corner, tap on the “Share” button and select the desired reader.
eBoox – synchronization with Android
eBoox – this is reading app, which I use myself and recommend to all owners of a bunch of iPad and Android smartphone. This program allows you to sync your books and reading progress across different platforms via Google Drive. eBoox can open a very large number of formats:
- EPUB
- MOBI
- DOC
- DOCX
- TXT
- FB2
- PRC
- RTF
- ODT
- HTML
- AZW
- AZW3
Moreover, if the book is archived in ZIP, then the application itself will unpack it.

Just like Apple Books, it supports different themes and font sizes, which will suit the eyes of almost any user. Unfortunately, there is not such a large selection of fonts themselves, but you can pick up something to your liking. Separately, I was pleased with the ability to choose the style of displaying the book when used in landscape mode: in two columns or in one.
Given that the screen on my iPad is not the largest, it was a waste of free space for two columns. Thanks to eBoox, I was able to set it up properly. Additionally, you can turn on page scrolling with the volume buttons, if for some reason it is inconvenient for you to scroll from the screen, and generally disable fields and buttons. In this mode, the text will take up the entire screen.
I did not find any serious shortcomings, except for fonts, in the application for a year of use. Therefore, I advise everyone who needs a convenient cross-platform reader.
PocketBook – audiobooks for iPad
PocketBook – a reader from the manufacturer of the same name readers with e-ink screens. Supports a large number of formats:
- EPUB
- FB2
- MOBI
- DJVU
- DOCX
- RTF
- TXT
- HTML
For comic book lovers CBR and CBZ support. We can say that the application supports all the most popular e-book formats. For those who prefer to listen, there is support for MP3 and M4B. And if your favorite book is not in audio format, then you can voice a text document using the built-in engine Text-to-Speech. Of course, the output voice is quite electronic, but you can listen.
Supported synchronization with Dropbox or Google Books. Books from these services can be transferred with one touch. Like the previous two readers, there are different color themes and fonts to choose from. Additionally, just like in eBoox, line spacing and margin size can be edited. Unfortunately, the reader from Apple cannot boast of such a thing.
The only downside to this app is that it seemed a little slow to me. It is possible that these are the problems of my iPad 2019, but no brakes were noticed in other readers. Summing up, we can say that PocketBook turned out to be a very functional reading application. They know how to make not only good readers, but also software.
KyBook 3 – Apple Pencil support
Kybook 3 – one of the most functional readers available in the App Store. Supports all known formats:
- EPUB
- FB2
- MOBI
- DJVU
- DOCX
- RTF
- TXT
- HTML
Can play audiobooks in MP3 and M4B formats. Allows you to create a convenient catalog of books by various categories: authors, plots, series, publishers, tags, popular, new, read and read. None of the previous applications allows you to so scrupulously put the library in order. KyBook 3 gives you the ability to create cool hand-drawn annotations for books with your Apple Pencil. Artists can show their imagination to the fullest.

Of course, a large number of different fonts, color themes and margin settings are supported. But this reader has several serious disadvantages. The first is too small settings buttons in reading mode. Yes, we most often carry out the adjustment once and for all books, but if necessary, I had to aim directly to get there. And the second minus is the subscription model or the purchase of the Pro version.
In the free version, the DJVU format will not be available, advertising banners may appear, and there is no synchronization via the KyBook cloud between different devices. And if the absence of some format and synchronization can still be somehow experienced, then I really would not like to see ads while reading. If you need the ability to draw in a book, then this reader is for you. Otherwise, it’s better to use something free.
