The Russian government has adopted decree, according to which stores for employees of foreign organizations and their families will be opened in Moscow and St. Petersburg at the end of August this year. They will carry out duty-free trade in goods with payment for rubles and foreign currency.
Similar stores existed in the USSR, they were called “Birch”, they sold scarce goods for dollars, but ordinary citizens were not served there. Not only foreigners could buy in them, but also Russians working in foreign countries (for example, translators, sailors and diplomats).
Employees of diplomatic missions, consulates and foreign organizations, as well as members of their families and relatives living with them, will be able to purchase in the new stores. When buying, it will be necessary to present documents confirming official or marital status, accreditation with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The name of such stores has not yet been determined. The government has established that they will sell goods that, in accordance with Russian laws and the law of the Eurasian Economic Union, fall under the customs procedure for duty-free trade, including alcohol, tobacco products, jewelry, cosmetics, perfumes, confectionery, smartphones and watches. You can pay for them in rubles, dollars or euros, so prices will be indicated in three currencies at once. According to Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, modern analogues of Beryozok will become an additional source of foreign currency for the country.
