Icons were invented to provide the ability to quickly visually identify an object on a computer. But sometimes the icon in Windows 10 is so faceless and uninformative that it is of little use. It’s good that the operating system allows you to simply change the icon. Here’s how.
BY TOPIC: How to find and disable Google Chrome extensions that slow down your computer.
Find the shortcut you need to change the icon on. The object can be located directly on the desktop or you need to go to it using “Explorer”. Right click on the shortcut and select “Properties”.
In the object properties window, make sure you are on the tab “Label”and then click the button there.Change icon…“.
An icon change window will appear, in which there is a field with a list of icons available for use with this shortcut. By default, the icon source is a Windows system file named imageres.dll. If you want to use an icon other than the default ones, you can click the button “Review…” and select either an EXE file, or a DLL, or an ICO. In fact, you can use any image you like as this, you just need to convert it to ICO format first. And after the file is loaded, you will see new icons in the list that you can use to represent the shortcut.
Whether you chose one of the default items or some of the added items, just click OK.
You should now be able to see in the shortcut’s properties window that the icon has changed to the one you selected. Click Applyto save your settings.
Congratulations! Your shortcut has a new icon. Feel free to install any icons you want. This will give the operating system more personality.
