The developers of the Viking survival game Valheim are once again struggling with a bug that has the potential to massively annoy players. Because in the worst case, players could lose their world progress due to a reset bug.

Via Twitter Iron Gate Studios has now issued a warning about a new reset bug in Valheim. “We are aware that there has been an issue lately where players from #Valheim were experiencing a game crash and their worlds were being reset. We are working on this and hope to have a patch available for testing very soon,” it said there in warning.

Workaround for the reset bug

Also, as work on the reset bug continues, the developers have come up with a workaround for the issue Reddit linked. The steps to restore the save for the world are described in section 5 there. The short version is as follows:

  1. For security reasons, save all current saves mentioned in Section 3.
  2. Start Valheim and switch from Cloud to Local in the main menu, both the world you want to restore and the character, and then exit the game
  3. Among the backups created in step 1, find the world with the largest file size
  4. Copy this world backup file, place it in Valheim Appdata’s worlds_local folder and overwrite the existing file there
  5. Rename the world backup file you just copied by deleting characters so that only worldname.db remains as the file name.
  6. Load your game

A detailed variant is also described in the corresponding Reddit article. But there is an even easier way. In another Twitter post, the developers explain that you can also easily create a backup of your save by moving the contents of the “Cloud” folder in the parent folder “Steam userdata” to the “Local” folder and then back in “Cloud” sets.
