The state energy giant Vattenfall receives SEK 145 million in support from the state Klimatklivet to produce aviation fuel on a commercial scale that is less climate-affecting than today’s fuels.

“Aviation is an area where efforts are required for us to achieve the climate goals. An important part of that change is new sustainable aviation fuels. There is a potential for large emission reductions here,” says Carl Mikael Strauss, unit manager at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, in a press release.

Vattenfall plans to separate carbon dioxide from flue gases during waste incineration at the CHP plant in Uppsala. Then the carbon dioxide must be converted to liquid form so that it can ultimately be used for aviation fuel.

The idea is that 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year can be separated and reused to produce aviation fuel.

Will produce up to 80,000 tonnes of aviation fuel per year

The facility in Uppsala – a collaboration with, among others, SAS – is expected to be completed in four years. It should then be able to produce 60,000–80,000 tonnes of aviation fuel per year.

At full production, the plant could supply SAS with up to 25 percent of the company’s global need for sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.

“This will be the first large-scale facility in the world to produce sustainable fossil-free aviation fuel. The support from Klimatklivet is very important to us when we together with partners invest in new groundbreaking innovations,” says Jan Greisz, business development manager at Vattenfall in the press release.

Facts: Climate change

Klimatklivet is a state support for investments that reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Since the start in 2015, Klimatklivet has distributed SEK 10.2 billion to companies, organizations and municipalities that have applied for support for climate investments.

The allocation for Klimatklivet 2022 is SEK 2.8 billion. The third application period for this year is between 23 August and 8 September.

Until 2026, there are additional funds in the investment.
