Function Always On Display first saw the light in 2016 with Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. It seemed like a breakthrough back then. The screen could constantly display some information, most often clocks and notifications from selected programs, with minimal loss of battery power. But when smartphones went on sale, it turned out that the loss of the battery is not so minimal, and the need for this, if available. Tap To Wake there isn’t any. And now the function has reached iPhones.

This is what Always on Display will look like on iOS.

AT iPhone 14 Pro already guaranteed to appear Always On Display. However, many users seriously doubt the need for such a function. Let’s take a look at why you need an always-on screen and see why you most likely won’t use it when you buy a new smartphone.

Always on Display – iPhone

Before the release of the beta versions of iOS 16, there were many concepts, but few people guessed the final result.

In a recent article, we analyzed all the most important changes that await the line iPhone 14. In a nutshell, let me remind you that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max waiting for a screen redesign. There will no longer be a cutout for the front camera in the form of an “eyebrow”. He will be replaced by a point under the front camera and an elongated notch for Face ID. There will be a little more usable space on the screen, and using a smartphone with a similar screen is much more pleasant. I can say this from my own experience of moving from iPhone X on an Android smartphone with a front camera in the form of a dot on the screen.

Under such a display, flagship iPhones will receive Always On Display. This innovation is confirmed by the new version of the program Xcode 14 Beta 4. When you turn on the “Sleep” mode, the wallpaper from the lock screen disappears. Only the clock and widgets remain. At the same time, both that and that significantly loses in brightness. It’s unclear how the new iPhones will display notifications. But, most likely, and it will soon be known.

This innovation will be exclusive to iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Maxwho will receive OLED screens with variable refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. It is due to this that Apple plans to reduce screen power consumption with Always On Display enabled. The benefits of this feature, of course, lie on the surface. It is possible to see the time, information on widgets and some notifications without activating the screen.

Always on display – cons

There will be no colored widgets on the lock screen in AoD mode.

But this mode also has its downsides. In my opinion, they greatly outweigh all the pros:

  • Battery consumption. AT Apple Watch with the support Always On Display installed the same screen with a variable refresh rate. And hours not at all live up to the evening. And if you decide to sleep in them, then you are unlikely to be able to use them during the day without charging. I personally know several users Apple Watch Series 5who simply do not use this function due to increased battery consumption. The iPhone is likely to be the same situation. If you want to use your smartphone to the fullest and not be left without communication, then you will have to abandon the “always on screen”.
  • Poor readability in the sun. Most often Always On Display we need it on the street or on the road, when we just need to see the time or some notifications. But the brightness of the screen becomes so low in this mode that you are less likely to be able to read it in direct sunlight. Most likely, in any case, you will have to light the screen and view the necessary information in a more familiar way. The next one follows from this point.
  • The screen brightness will be significantly lower than on this concept.

  • The screen lights up when the smartphone is picked up or a notification arrives. Many users have the function “Rise to Wake”. With the help of it, the iPhone determines that it was picked up and activates the screen. In this situation, you just won’t even see Always On Display. And the meaning of a function is to use it. Perhaps many after this innovation will turn off the “wake up”, but the question of which of these consumes the battery more is purely rhetorical. Moreover, each notification activates the screen, and there is no point in turning on AoD for the sake of reading notifications.
  • Opting out of widgets on the lock screen. iOS 16 brought widgets to iPhone lockscreens. Naturally, the information on them must be updated. And even with a reduced screen refresh rate, they will still load new data and show it to you. This will further affect the lifetime iPhone 14 Pro from the battery. There will be only one way out – to abandon convenient widgets in favor of the good old clock without additional information.

It is these moments that affect the fact that most of the users iPhone 14 Pro won’t activate Always On Display on an ongoing basis. After the purchase, of course, you will want to try the innovation, but, most likely, in the future it will be disabled. Perhaps on iPhone 14 Pro Max due to the larger battery AoD can be used with more convenience. But do not forget about the readability of the screen in the light, and then decide whether you need it or not.

Rejection looks amazing Apple from implementation Always On Display in regular iPhone 14. Even cheap Android smartphones can constantly display data on the screen, and one of the most expensive smartphones in the world will never be able to. But how else to make users pay more for really pumped devices? That’s right, only by limiting the functionality in cheaper ones. Let’s hope that next year all iPhones will receive a similar innovation, and users will have a choice. The main thing is to remember that some disadvantages are always hidden behind beautiful advantages.
