German lawmakers have agreed on a regulation that will allow gas companies to pass on higher prices to customers, after the government stepped in to bail out a supplier earlier this year. Thursday’s agreement by the Cabinet was accompanied by a demand by Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck that relief be provided for consumers as prices rise. The levy would help suppliers which are having to pay more for gas to replace less expensive supplies from Russia, as Berlin hastens to slash its dependency on energy from the country, amid Moscow’s war on Ukraine.
