To reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, Amazon is testing delivery with electric cargo bikes that have been fitted out to hold as many packages as possible while being carbon neutral.

Aware of the pollution that the delivery of parcels by truck can cause, Amazon continues to test new modes of transport that are more respectful of the environment. The e-commerce giant’s goal is to make 50% of its deliveries carbon neutral by 2030, before reaching 100% by 2040.

Amazon turns electric cargo bikes into mini delivery trucks

It was in the United Kingdom that Jeff Bezos’ company launched its “micromobility hub”. More precisely in the London Borough of Hackney which is part of the very low emission zones of London in which vehicles are taxed according to their CO2 emissions. The only vehicles exempted are electric vehicles.

Amazon’s upgraded e-cargo bikes offer ample space for packages and partial rider protection from the elements. By developing the use of these means of transport to deliver parcels, Amazon claims to be able to deliver one million parcels a year, in addition to those already delivered by the company’s electric vans.

Foot deliverers will also come as reinforcements. In total, these are “thousands” of traditional truck journeys that will be replaced by these modes of transport. Amazon announces that it wants to open hubs additional in the coming months, especially in the United States where Amazon has partnered with the company Rivian to manufacture a new range of electric vans.

Soft modes of transport increasingly used for delivery

Aware of the role they have to play in reducing the ecological impact attributable to parcel transport, and not having to reduce their activity, transport companies are switching to soft mobility. Examples include UPS or Domino’s, which also uses electric bicycles for their deliveries, or DHL, which tested autonomous electric vehicles in 2017.

Delivery robots are also being tested to deliver parcels directly to the customer. This is the case of the Scout robot, from Amazon, and the SameDay Bot, from FedEx. Amazon also plans to use the air to deliver boxes to your doorstep. After years of development and requests for authorizations from the competent authorities, packages delivered by drones are arriving this year.
