The development of the retro console Intellivision Amico seems to be turning into a monster flop. There were already plenty of problems anyway, and now even the trademark Intellivision Amico has officially been given the status “dead”.
Intellivision Amico has an eventful history behind it, which can primarily be described as “failure”. The retro console was originally supposed to be released in October 2020, but was then postponed several times, including to April 2021 and autumn 2021. Another postponement followed in August 2021 and so far there is no sign of the device. However, absurdly, in October 2021 the first eight games were already released.
Intellivision, meanwhile, made desperate attempts to salvage the project, including through massive downsizing and licensing its own brands to flush money into the coffers. The same is also urgently needed, because more and more pre-orderers are pushing for a cancellation and are demanding their money back, but are currently being put off due to the downsizing – the processing of the refunds is progressing correspondingly slowly.
Now there is another indication that the end of Intellivision Amico is near. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently listed the Intellivision Amico brand as “DEAD”. The status change is due to Intellivision’s failure to file a Statement of Use.
The USPTO responded promptly: “The application above is abandoned because we did not receive within six months of the Notice of Allowance issue date a Statement of Use, or a Request for Extension of Time to File a Statement of Use.”
Although it now appears that the Amico brand is dead, Intellivision still has two months to file a petition to revive the brand, in which Intellivision must explain that the delay was unintentional and then provide either a statement of use or an need to apply for a further extension.
So currently doesn’t look like the retro console will ever see the light of day. Right from the start, there were doubts as to whether the concept was even justified in the age of retro download games on smartphones, tablets, consoles and PCs – especially for a price of almost 300 euros per console.
